It is the year 2050. I have travelled into the future and am witnessing an interesting scene between a grandfather and a granddaughter. She seems to be oddly 6 years old. They are sitting peacefully in their newly constructed home on the 50th floor of the building. The grandpa is gleefully watching his little kiddo surf the internet while watching TV. I do not fail to notice that both of them have an oxygen cylinder behind their backs and a mask on their noses to breathe. Don’t know why, but I touch my nose to ensure that I do not need any such equipment in my travel-bubble. I smile!
I go back to observing the man and the kid; happy and content with what they are doing. Suddenly, there’s this breaking news on TV which shocks me:
More than 2000 customers die while waiting at the oxygen distribution center in the city. The reason being delay in getting the new supply cylinders & that the hapless ones had come at the 11th hour, when their oxygen stock was just about to exhaust.
On watching the ghastly news, the grandfather first checks the pressure meter of his oxygen cylinder and smiles because he is reassured that he had enough stock.
Seeing that, the grandchild says “Don’t worry dadu! We have stocked enough number of cylinders at our place. Don’t worry for dead people, it is their problem!
The grandfather says: “In my childhood, we had fresh air, abundance of oxygen. No one had to die for want of oxygen. This is abysmal. I cannot bear this anymore.” He has tears in his eyes.
The uninterested grandkid stops him midway and says “Do not go back to your childhood. Let’s have a look at this site. Isn’t the interior wonderful dadu? How’s this floral arrangement? It will look good in your room!
Grandpa overwhelmingly yells, “This is all plastic, my child! In our days we had real flowers; beautiful and fragrant. I do not want this plastic.”
Ignoring his feelings, the grandchild says “See dadu this flying object on it, so beautiful it looks. I appreciate the creativity of the designer!”
Grandpa says, “My dear girl! This flying object is a bird. In my childhood many such birds used to chirp and play in our garden. Ah, the sparrows, pigeons, parrots…”
The kid gets puzzled: “What is a garden, dadu?”
Dadu holds his head in despair.
“Oh! How do I explain you that? You don’t know what a garden is. You don’t know how people used to breathe. You don’t know that there were flowers and birds. What a sad life are we living! The change could have been back THEN. Now, nothing can be done.”
If you really do not want to be the dadu in this story, do your bit to save the environment! Or you will see this story come alive and you will remember having read it some decades ago and will reminisce: I could have made a difference.
Think and Act. The change can be NOW; THEN is too late.
(The thought behind this was my father’s in order to present this in front of Youth Enlightened for Society, YES group. I gave it this form after hearing the concept from him)
